Necklace Chain Length Guide: Which Length Fits Which Neckline
The number-one reason necklace returns happen is not quality — it is length. A chain that looked right in the photo sits two centimeters too high or disappears under a collar. This guide ends the guesswork.
The four lengths that matter
- Choker, 35–40 cm — sits at the base of the neck. Best with open necklines, square necks and off-shoulder tops. Pairs beautifully with a second, longer chain.
- Princess, 45 cm — the universal default. Lands at the collarbone on most people and works with almost every neckline, which is why most of our necklaces, like the Mirror Lake Sterling Silver Pearl Necklace, ship at this length.
- Matinee, 55–60 cm — elegant over knits, turtlenecks and work shirts. The right choice if you mostly wear higher necklines.

How to measure in 30 seconds
Wrap a soft tape (or a phone charging cable, then measure it) around your neck where you want the chain to sit. Add 5 cm for a comfortable drape. That number is your princess/matinee target. If you are between sizes, take the longer one — a chain that is slightly long reads intentional; slightly short reads accidental.
Match length to neckline
- Crew neck / T-shirt: princess (45 cm) sits just below the collar — clean.

- Turtleneck / knit: matinee (55–60 cm) over the fabric, not under.
- Open / square neck: choker, or choker + princess layered.

When in doubt: buy the extender

Layering rule of thumb
