How to Choose a Pearl Necklace: A Practical Guide

Pearl necklaces are the single most gifted item in our shop, and the most misunderstood. This guide cuts the jargon down to the five things that actually matter.

1. Know which pearl you are buying

We label every piece accurately: natural pearl pieces say natural pearl; shell pearl pieces say shell pearl. If a seller cannot answer this question in one sentence, walk away.

2. Luster beats everything

The soul of a pearl is luster — how sharply it reflects light. A smaller pearl with mirror luster outclasses a bigger dull one. Check under a window or bright lamp: you should see a crisp reflection, not a milky glow.

3. Size and length, decoded

Bead sizes: 6–7 mm is delicate and everyday; 8–9 mm reads classic; 10 mm+ is a statement. When unsure, 7–8 mm princess length is the safe, flattering choice.

4. Silver matters as much as the pearl

Pearls are soft; the clasp and chain are what break. Look for 925 sterling silver fittings (stamped S925), a secure clasp, and knotted or well-seated settings. Our pearl pieces all use 925 silver — see the pearl collection and filter by Pearl.

5. Care in one line

Pearls go on last, come off first, and get wiped with a soft dry cloth — no chemicals, no ultrasonic, no shower. Full routine in our silver & stone care guide.

Gifting shortcut

For a gift, choose a princess-length strand in 7–8 mm with a simple sterling clasp, and add our free handwritten card note at checkout. It is the combination that gets re-ordered most.
